...with a sudden shock, Ilana's eyes shot open. she sat up briskly, looking around as the drowsiness wore off.
gone were the suger plums, the flowers, the castles and fanfare. gone were the dancers, the players, the Princess.
seeing the Nutcracker lying on the floor, she gasped in alarm and quickly scooped the small wooden figure into her arms.
small wooden.....just plain wood, shaped so carefully by Herr Drosselmeyer's hands....
then, she noticed something glinting on the floor next to where the Nutcracker had lain.
her eyes widened as she carefully picked up the Tiara the Suger Plum Fairy had granted her, alongside her prince.....
she looked up at the mighty tree, it's lights aglow, it's greatness undiminished in the coolness of the night, the cold floor making her shiver through her nightgown.
"Was it...was it just a dream?" Ilana whispered to herself as she looked up at the tree, her vivid memories filling her thoughts, as she recalled all she had seen...."
