Why Didn't You Just Shoot Him

After Lance told Ilana and Brian about his adventures in the Escape from Galaluna, Brian brings up what can only be called a glaring point: when Lance was confronted by the traitorous officer, he was holding a gun.
why, instead of having a long, time-consuming fight which could have resulted in his death or incapacitation, thus keeping him from warning the king, did Lance not just eliminate the traitor then and there?
Ilana, on the other hand, is not surprised at all.
